Dr. Blaine Schlawin
Dr. Blaine Schlawin grew up in Johnston, Iowa, and completed his medical training at Des Moines University, followed by anesthesiology residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Children’s Nebraska.
He now cares for neonates, infants, and children across the Des Moines metro as part of Associated Anesthesiologists, PC, primarily at Blank Children’s Hospital.
His work focuses on improving pediatric perioperative safety and supporting community hospitals. Recent projects have included developing pediatric medication protocols, creating safer workflows for mediastinal masses and pediatric CT imaging, implementing adaptive workflows for autistic patients, J-tip local anesthetic use in preop, reducing same-day surgical cancellations through improved case review, and updating NICU NPO guidelines.
Through Here I Am: Pediatric Perioperative Network, he strives to reflect the love of Jesus through service, collaboration, and an ego-free, team-based approach to caring for all children. He lives in Urbandale with his wife, son, and golden doodle.
